22 January 2010 - Norwegian paper group Norske Skog ASA (OSL: NSG) said Friday its fourth-quarter earnings in South America were some NOK50m weaker than in the third quarter of 2009, due to lower volumes and prices, higher costs and unfavourable currency development.

In the energy segment, NOK27m costs have been recognised in connection with a reclassification between gross operating earnings and other gains and losses from the third quarter.

The Norske Skog Hebei mill in China was sold in the fourth fake rolex quarter of 2009, and the result for it is included only for October.

Fourth-quarter depreciation is some NOK150m lower than in the previous one. This relates mainly to the Australasian region, where the estimated useful life of the paper machines at Norske
embroidered patches Skog Boyer has been extended due to the investment project, tagged Softwood Conversion. The useful life was changed as of 1 January 2009, but this has not been reflected in the accounts until the fourth quarter, Norske Skog said in the statement.

Norske Skog is due to release its report for the fourth quarter of 2009 on 4 February 2010.
